1988 Bayfield 36 Cutter Rig S/V Sea Frog
Asking Price $75,000 usd
This is a very well designed and solidly built blue water monohull. Sea Frog is a great cruising boat which has had most of its systems upgraded in the last 5 years and cruised the Caribbean for the last 3 years.
In 2014 – 2015 the previous owner did an extensive retrofit that included all new electronics, new lithium ion battery bank, new solar and wind gen, rebuilt Yanmar 4JHE, interior upgrades including custom mattresses, new cushions, new head and stove. This boat is outfitted with 12v electronics making the energy usage very small. It is setup to support a normal load (fans, lights, tv, fridge) with the solar and wind generation.
I bought the boat in Jan 2016 because the boat was virtually turnkey and ready to cruise. I replaced the rigging and added a swim platform then left to sail the Caribbean for three years.
There are so many details that make this boat ideal to live and cruise on, just a few of my favorites are the built in screens on all ports, hatches and companionway (no bugs at night), a separate tub / shower combo (no wet bathrooms here), huge lounging couch in the salon, and the energy management is very balanced so no need for a generator on this boat!
I soloed this boat for two years and it is easy and quite enjoyable. When she is dialed in she is a dream.
I unfortunately have reached the end of my cruising budget so for a lucky individual or couple they are going to get an exceptionally well outfitted cruising boat for a great price.

Sea Frog is a very roomy 36ft boat. This is a classic looking boat, with beautiful lines inside and out. Lots of teak down below, all in great shape with a fiberglass headliner. The master is forward with a pullman style double berth. It has a nice sized hanging locker and a “dresser” for lots of storage. The quarter berth is aft and also has a nice sized closet with its own door for privacy. The salon area has been expanded to offer a large over-sized lounging area with custom cushions. 12 volt TV coupled with fusion stereo and Bose speakers makes watching movies a great experience. All interior lighting has been upgraded to LED, many have dimming features. The head is just forward of the mast and is quite spacious with a separate shower / tub combo, not a wet head!! All hatches, portholes and the companionway have built in screens to keep the bugs out. Galley has an extra deep sink and two burner propane stove. The fridge / freezer combo is quite large and very, very efficient drawing about 3 amps.
The cockpit has sea deck which makes it very comfortable even without the cushions or boat chairs. Extra tall dodger gives you great visibility and no hitting your head getting in and out of the cabin. Brand new einsineglass in the dodger. Full cockpit enclosure of both screens and einsineglass. The binnacle has a large nav pod with a large Furuno NetNav screen, wind instruments and speed and log. Raymarine autopilot is super reliable and critical for anyone soloing.
Cutter Rigged – yankee cut jib, fully battened main, roller furlers on both jib and staysail
Sails are in fine shape, Standing and running rigging replaced in 2016
Hoist the sail from the mast. I had purchased the deck hardware to bring the controls back, but preferred to do it at the mast for visibility and ease.
The engine is very reliable and has been well maintained with service every 150 – 200 hours. Currently has about 900 hours on the rebuilt engine.
- Yanmar 4JHE rebuilt 2015
- Upgraded transmission 2015
- High output alternator
- Upgraded belt – serpentine
The previous owner did a meticulous rewiring of the boat, all new wire was pulled, all new electronics installed as well as all new 12 volt electronics, LED lights. This boat is exceptionally efficient. Average usage is about 5.5 amps per hour, with all navigation, autopilot and radar on about 15 -17 amps. The 300 watts of solar and 400 watt wind generator more than keeps up with the burn rate. I am often full before noon on a sunny day.

- 300 watts of Solar – 2014
- Air Breeze 400 watt Wind Generator – 2014
